Harriet Tubman (1821–1913) was an escaped slave who became one of the most effective conductors on the Underground Railroad, later serving as a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. The 1978 stamp was the second issue in the U.S. Postal Service’s Black Heritage series, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to American history.
